Abdul Sattar EdhiKarachi/New Delhi: Pakistan's charity foundation Edhi on Tuesday politely turned down Rs 1 crore donation announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking care of deaf and mute Indian girl Geeta during her over a decade-long stay in the country.

Prominent philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, who is the founder and head of the Edhi Foundation, thanked the Prime Minister for announcing the donation, but declined to accept it for his charity.

Complimenting Sattar Edhi's wife Bilqis Bano for taking care of Geeta with love and affection on Monday, the Prime Minister announced that India would give the Edhi Foundation Rs 1 crore as a token of appreciation, not just for taking care of Geeta, but also for the wonderful work that the Foundation has been doing.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Abdul Sattar Edhi’s son Faisal Edhi also thanked the Prime Minister and clarified that taking funds from governments is against the foundation’s policy

and added that he would be very pleased if the Prime Minister would spend the amount offered for the welfare of the deaf and mute citizens in India.

Meanwhile, the Indian government on Tuesday said the Edhi Foundation has accepted the donation. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said: "Bilkis gratefully accepted that donation."
