Hyderabad: Failure of the administration to resolve the grievances of outsourcing nurses at Gandhi Hospital has allegedly resulted in surgeries being postponed. The nurses have been demanding permanent employment and also increase in the salaries.

They demanded that salaries be increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per month. Some of the nurses are working for the last ten years and they say that it has been too long. But the government, without even calling them for negotiations and trying to resolve their problems, is learnt to have decided to appoint new outsourcing nurses.

The doctors told the The Hans India that the services of the outsourcing nurses played an important role in rendering patient care in the hospital. With over 200 nurses on strike, the hospital authorities had to postpone surgeries. The number of surgeries had registered a fall by 50 percent, they said. Eight operation theatres were closed on Monday due to strike and lack of admissions, said a staff nurse.

However, the Causality Operation Theatre (COT) has been conducting only one operation for the past 15 days. Majority of wards wore a deserted look without patients and staff nurses. The orthopedic ward which is usually crowded with patients was deserted. The post operation ward has 19 beds of which only eight beds had patients who underwent surgery some

15 days ago. Srinivas, a patient suffering from liver problem said, “My father was admitted 10 days ago at Liver Intensive Care Unit. Here, there is no emergency care. If any problem arises, I have to take him to the fifth floor on foot as the lift is not working. I have to remind the nurses on duty regarding the medicine dose.

Due to shortage of nurses medicines are not being administered in time.” Meanwhile, the doctors’ association at Gandhi hospital said they were also contemplating to support the strike of staff nurses since their demands were genuine. Gandhi Hospital Staff Nurses Outsourcing and Contract Committee members B Upendra Goud and Madhulatha said they would continue the strike until the government took a positive decision.
