Hyderabad: The Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Centre have entered into two separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to set up a dredging harbour at Antharvedi in East Godavari district and for water transport between Kakinada and Puducherry.

The MoUs were signed in the presence of Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at Mumbai on Thursday. In the first phase as part of the agreement, Rs 460 crore is expected to be spent. The state government would provide 200 acres for the proposed harbour.

The harbour would be one among the frontline ones in handling dredgers in the South Asia. The project was proposed following international liners carrying heavy cargo visiting several ports in the coast, for which dredging would play a key role in the maintenance of depths for these ships.

The government in March 2015 had held a meeting with Directorate of Ports, District Collector and officials of DCI at Antarvedi.

Accordingly, 238 acres of land was identified at Kara falling under the Antarvedi revenue village under Sakhinetipalli mandal. The move is to setup a corporate office, a training centre and to build up infrastructure facilities. The total project is expected to cost Rs 1,800 crore.

Similarly, the other MOU signed would help in rejuvenating the Kakinada, Eluru, Kommamuru and Buckingham canal's of Krishna and Godavari rivers to enable water transport from Kakinada to Puducherry. The total length of the rejuvenated water way will be of 1,078 km out of which nearly 888 km falls within the state geographical area.

As part of the MoU, it was envisioned to take up the project works of North Buckingham canal works between Pedaganjam to Chennai of about 258 km in the first phase to restore water transport in this stretch. As part of the first phase, widening of canal, reconstruction of 98 bridges and canal locks would be taken up. For the proposed water transport about 1,450 acres of public and private lands were identified for land acquisition.
