Hyderabad: Agriculture scientist Dr Neelamraju Ganga Prasada Rao (89) passed away in the city on Wednesday. Born in Korisapadu of Prakasam district, Rao studied at Bapatla Agricultural College, Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi and Bihar University.

He was also awarded DSc by the Chandrasekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology. Rao was well-known for basic and applied research in breeding and agronomy of several dry land crops. Due to his contributions to sorghum improvement in India, he was at times referred as the ‘Father of Hybrid Sorghum’ in India.
