Failure of Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation Limited (TACTV) to get Digital Addressable System (DAS) is jeopardising future of AP Fibre Net project, backed by the State government, which announced all-in-one services at Rs 149 per month.

Nellore: Failure of Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation Limited (TACTV) to get Digital Addressable System (DAS) is jeopardising future of AP Fibre Net project, backed by the State government, which announced all-in-one services at Rs 149 per month.

It may be recalled that the State government announced seamless internet, cable, and phone facility to the households at an affordable cost.

Fibre Net planned to deliver services to 1.3 crore households, 60,000 schools and 6,580 primary health centres across the State, with a projected speed of 10-15 mbps a highest ever in the country.

  • Experts say Ministry of Broadcasting might deny permission to the State government to run Fibre Net project, as government entities are not authorised to operate cable TV networks

However, it is the Ministry of Broadcasting that has to give permissions. Arasu Cable TV Corp Ltd, owned by the Tamil Nadu government, which has been operating on a provisional permission, is struggling to secure permission for internet services and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV).

As Ministry of Broadcasting denied permission for Arasu TV Corporation last year, the TN government approached the Supreme Court and the Prime Minister subsequently for the permission.

The decision of the Ministry has been upheld even by the apex court. There was no proper response from the Union government and the TV Corporation reportedly cancelled its order to a China-based company for supply of more than 10 lakh set top boxes.

“The rule book says private operator can provide services, whereas it should not be done by a government organisation. These two governments have set up their own corporations acting as trading concerns, which is not permissible.

So, the TN government is in dilemma and the impact would certainly be on the State government too,” said a representative of a popular MSO.

Indicating such a state of confusion, a senior official of the AP Fibre Net said that consumers have to buy a set top box for phone, internet services and another for digital cable transmission.

It was earlier said that one set top box was enough for all services. Sources said the State government has not obtained valid permission from the Union.

Now, if the AP Fibre Net provides services to people at Rs 149, consumers have to buy additional set top boxes for all the services which would be a huge burden on the consumers.

Interestingly, there is no proper data of consumers who have obtained set top boxes in city and other parts of the district as Multi System Operators (MSO) were operating in many areas.
