Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation urged the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to identify the Vijayawada airport as ‘customs airport’ to operate short distance international flights.

In a letter to AAI on Thursday, chamber president M Muralikrishna said that Vijayawada airport witnessed tremendous increase in passenger traffic with growth of 71.38 per cent during the first half of current financial year as compared to that of the corresponding period of last year.

The domestic as well as foreign travellers tend to swell further due to functioning of entire administration from Vijayawada, he said.

He said the reputed health and educational institutions were setting up their campus in addition to premier national institutes. The visits of foreign embassies and delegations from different countries are on the rise for trade and other purposes, he said.

As upgrading the airport to international status may take time due to delay in runway expansion, the chambers has requested to accord status of ‘customary airport’, which will facilitate operation of short distance international flights, particularly to Middle East and South East Asian Nations, including Dubai and Singapore.

Murali Krishna said the flight to Dubai was a preferred option for the passenger who wants to travel to the United States, Europe or Africa.

He further said that the lack of customary clearance facility at the airport was causing hardships to international travellers both outbound and inbound.

He also said there was a persistent demand from all quarters for customs clearance unit in view of the growing needs.
