Atmakur (Kurnool): Two leopards fought like the proverbial Kilkenny cats in Pangidi forest beat of Atmakuru-Nallamala tiger reserve leading to the death of the male during the past 24 hours.

The other big cat got injured in the incident. The incident took place at a stone’s throw away distance from the base camp at Pangidi.

The place of the incident is just 100 meters away from the Velugodu reservoir. Forest trackers found carcass of a six-year-old leopard near a thorny bush. Divisional forest officer Selvam and in-charge ranger Sankaraiah visited the spot and concluded that the death could be due to a fight
between the big cats.

Veterinary doctor Radhika conducted post-mortem on the leopard. Later, it was consigned to flames. However, several raise doubts over the death of the leopard could be due to getting trapped in the trap arranged by hunters while it was on its way to the reservoir to quench its thirst.

It is customary for the hunters to arrange traps near the reservoirs as the water level in it recedes with mercury shooting up. There were many instances of wild animals getting caught in the traps arranged by hunters and dying.
