Despite being selected for the smart city status, the city still reels under debilitating issues of drainage and garbage dumping
Kakinada: The sanitation wing in Kakinada smart city is in need of overall revamp and development to suit the changing needs. The 150-year-old civic body attained corporation status in the year 2006 and the first term of the newly elected body ended in the year 2011. Since then the 5.50 lakh populated civic body is under special officer rule for the last seven years.
Under this backdrop, the smart city status to the city elated the citizens as the city had been chosen in the first phase among the twenty at national level. But this happiness was short- lived as the dumping yard facility which had been eluding the people even after one and half decade of intensive search for the same. This process is still going on resulting in piling of garbage at several places in the city and suburbs. As far as sanitation department is concerned, the same is said to be understaffed.
As per the present population count the city is in need of more than 2,000 sanitary staff but managing only with 600 pointed out People’s voice organization convener D. Ramana Raju. The Kakinada Rate Payers Association president Y. D. Rama Rao, observed that fist of all a suitable site has to be found for dumping yard. Secondly the sanitation department needs modernisation and mechanisation. At present the same has been going on mostly under manual process only he said.
Unless these two key issues are taken care of, immediately, the sanitation situation will not improve he added. In this aspect the municipal authorities should take care of long-term interests instead making temporary remedies he strongly felt.
When contacted Kakinada municipal corporation health officer, Dr. Srinivasa Naik said that the process for identification of dumping yard has been speeded up. With regard to improving the strength of sanitation staff, we are awaiting for the directive on the issue by new district collector Kartikeya Misra as the collector is also special officer for Kakinada civic body.
