Highly placed sources said the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) also suggested the Light Metro for Vijayawada and capital city area in its detailed project report (DPR) in the past and the same was suggested by Australian expert Edward Dotson, a few days ago. Sreedharan has reportedly pointed out this in his letter along with other contentious issues.

Amaravati: State government which was caught in embarrassing situation with the sudden exit of ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan from Metro Rail project, has now decided to request him to continue as advisor to government even for new proposed project of Light Metro Rail in Vijayawada and Amaravati.

Highlights:

  • Requests E Sreedharan to continue in his role as advisor for Light Metro Project for Vijayawada and Amaravati
  • Sreedharan was against Heavy Metro and suggest Light Metro at the outset
  • Government went in for Light Metro only after Centre dismissed Heavy Metro plans and Australian expert Edward Dotson impressed Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu with a presentation on light metro

This development reportedly came following another letter from Sreedharan a few days ago pointing out faults being committed by state government on metro rail project.

A senior officer of Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation (AMRC) said though the DMRC suggested Light Metro, the State government had preferred Heavy Metro for which Union government did not give nod raising several doubts over viability of the project.

Surprisingly, the AMRC is reportedly not interested to continue relations with DMRC for which Sreedharan is principal advisor even though it has rich experience in executing Heavy Metro (Delhi), Rapid Metro (Gurgaon) and now executing agency for proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Kozhikode. This shows ambiguity over intention of officials.

The DMRC withdrew its staff from Vijayawada some days ago and closed its office after Sreedharan’s resignation to the post of advisor to AP government in July.Meanwhile, municipal administration department suggested AMRC to write a letter to Sreedharan requesting his expertise for establishing Light Metro in Vijayawada.

Differences cropped up between state government and DMRC after cancelation of tenders for Metro Rail project in May.
The DMRC did not take recommendations of the state government into consideration on selecting contract agencies for the Metro project and cancelled tenders even after L&T and Afcons infrastructure had been selected in technical and financial bids.

The tenders were cancelled as the two contract agencies submitted bids at higher rates. However, AMRC managing director N P Ramakrishna Reddy told The Hans India that it could be better, if the DMRC suggested light metro rail only at initial stage but they had gone for Metro Rail project based on data that projects future population in capital city area.
