Nellore: City Mayor Abdul Aziz said waste-to-energy plant is being set up at Sarvepalli. Addressing a meeting here on Friday, the Mayor stated that the district had bagged 140th rank across the country in implementing Swachh Bharat activities.

He attended an awareness session on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan-Swachh Survekshan at Sri Venkateswara Kasturba Kalakshetram and said the union government is organising competitions among civic bodies and would allocate funds based on the rank.

Now, this is the high time to focus on the cleanliness activities, he exhorted. The district had bagged 3rd spot in construction of toilets. The same spirit has to be exhibited in implementing other programmes for getting huge allocations.

He said around 8,000 toilets were constructed in the city itself. He also said civic body is planning to provide safe and clean drinking water to the denizens by taking up the project at a cost of Rs 565 crore.

He said, as part of the project, they were replacing the existing pipeline which were of 70 years old. The Mayor explained water would be supplied to the city population within six months. He also said they had undertaken works with another Rs 565 core for UGD, sewerage treatment plants and others.

Joint Collector A Md Imtiaz said cleanliness is essential not only at home but also surroundings where they live in. He said green and blue tubs were arranged in 12 wards in city on the pilot basis where people have to deposit segregated dry and wet wastes.

The Joint Collector lamented that out of the listed 122 countries across the globe, India occupies 120th place in providing safe drinking water. He said around 6 lakh kids are losing lives due to lack of proper sanitation. He said they had created an awareness among public on use of toilets through 41-day Atma Gourava Deeksha.

Municipal Health Officer Amarendra Reddy said they would arrange blue and green tubs in all streets and apartments in the city and the corporation sanitation staff would bring the waste for disposal. Earlier, the Joint Collector flagged off the rally from Sarvodaya College. Mayor and the Joint Collector distributed prizes to the winners of elocution competitions. Senior officials and others were present.
