Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Surveying & Mapping (IIS&M), Survey of India, Ministry of Science & Technology, GOI will be inaugurating a training programme for Thailand officials from February 1, 2016. Speaking to the media here on Thursday, SV Singh, DSG and U.N. Gurjar, Addl. Surveyor- IIS&M informed that the training programme is part of the agreement on Scientific, Technical and Environmental Cooperation and Transfer of Technology signed between the Republic of India and the Kingdom of Thailand.

For inauguration of this Training Programme on 01/02/2016, two officers from Thailand namely, Ms Varaiporn Sintop and Mr. Tatiya, Director of Product Division of GISTDA will be coming. From India, Surveyor General of India Shri R.M. Tripathi, and Joint Secretary, Director and Scientist from DST will be coming for inauguration.

There are two components of the Project will be mapping on 1:4k of a Town in Thailand of 100 sq. k.m. of urban area with the technical help and expertise of SOI. Currently mapping of a town - U Thong, in Supanburi Province in Thailand is going on. Second part of the project is strengthening of Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) manpower by imparting training to its officers by SOI on improving capability of medium and large scale mapping, digitalizing process, data extraction, data updation and other appropriate technologies using space, air-craft and ground based plat-form.

The overall aim of the project is to help GISTDA by helping them know-how in the mapping process for large scale mapping by taking up mapping of 100 sq. k.m. areas in Thailand. SOI has to impart training to officials from GISTDA, Thailand. Currently 7 (seven) officers from GISTDA , Thailand are coming for one month training in Indian Institute of Surveying and Mapping (IIS&M) to take training in different expertise of Surveying and Mapping. This will help GISTDA to create expert human resources to take up large scale mapping, specially, urban areas, in their own country.

Shri Singh said that under this Agreement, a Programme of Cooperation (PoC) in the fields of Science and Technology for the period of 2012-14 was signed in 2012 between the two Governments. Under this PoC, a MoU was signed on 30/05/2013 during the visit of the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India between Survey of India (SOI) and Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) for taking up a project titled "Indo-Thai Geo Spatial Cooperation”.

The MoU seeks to share and demonstrate capabilities and expertise gained by the Survey of India in Urban Mapping by undertaking survey of a chosen town of area about 100 sq.km., in Thailand, and for imparting training in surveying and mapping techniques to five officials of GISTDA each year at the Indian Institute of Surveying and Mapping (IISM) at Hyderabad.MOU between Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency and Survey of India for cooperation in the field of Mapping and Geospatial Technology Applications. This Project is one of the major Science & Technology Cooperation between India & Thailand.
