Save the Children’s mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children, and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. Bringing drop-out children back toschool is the need of an hour. With the mobile learning center Save the Children managed to change lives of many students. To inspire more and more people to be part of this noble cause, Save the Children is launching a booklet, entitled ‘Moving on with Education’. This book featuressuccessfulstories from the mobile learning center which promotesright to education. The main aim is to target Government officials from Education Department, school headmasters and teachers, children and parents and other stakeholders for a better and developed future of our children.

Sandhya Krishnan,State Programme Manager in Maharashtra for Save the Children stated, “As per the 2004-05 survey carried out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai, it was found that 78,000 children did not attend school. Nearly 50 per cent of the children were from just five wards, including M-East (Govandi/Mankhurd), K-East (Andheri-East) and H (Bandra). So our main focus was in theseareas and over the last two years we have managed to make students learn basic reading and writing which created a huge difference in lives of this students. We are very thankful to ITOCHU and KiranDighavkar, Assistant Commissioner, M-East ward for all their support to make ‘Moving on the Education’ a huge success.”

Mr. Hirozumi Morishige, Chief Regional Officer – Mumbai, ITOCHU India Pvt Ltd., stated “I cannot forget the children's delighted faces when they first saw the wrapped bus arriving in their community. The MLC helps children not only to develop reading and writing abilities but also to cultivate the children’s imagination and eventually to nurture a rich sense of humanity. We supported this project because it matches ITOCHU's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) principle based on our founder's management philosophy, Sampo Yoshi. (This means as well as being good for the seller and the buyer, merchants shall contribute to good of the society where they do business.).”
In the year 2013, Save the Children and ITOCHU Corporation, Japan, together introduced the Mobile Learning Centreproject targeting out-of-school childrenaroundM-East Ward area. In 17 months of the project intervention by Save the Children, the Mobile Learning Centre has been able to introduce early reading and writing skills to 1728 children. 10 children groups have reached out to 888 children, educating on various issues of Child Protection. 1441 families were counseled for enrolling their children in the nearest AnganwadiCentres.382 out-of-school children got mainstreamed into formal schooling system.
The Mobile Learning Centre also continued providing academic support to children post-school hours and counseling parents of the children attending the MLC to ensure their retention.
