Critical Care Medicine Conference was held in dome conference auditorium at Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, white field, EPIP area, Bangalore -66 on 16th & 17th January 2016.
Patients undergoing complex Cardiac Surgery and Neurosurgery require ICU care in the immediate postoperative period. Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences performs 12 – 16 operations every day and up to 3500 surgeries in a year totally free of any charges. Till now 11, 00,000 outpatient consultations, 22,000 Neurosurgeries, 19,000 cardiac surgeries, 51,000 cardiac catheterizations were carried at SSSIHMS, white field Bangalore. These patients are looked after in the 4 ICU and CCU units.
The department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at SSSIHMS, Bangalore, in collaboration with faculty of the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine, Houston; University of Texas and Indian society of critical care medicine (ISCCM) designed a two day academic program to enhance knowledge and skills of ICU physicians. There were 2 days of didactic lectures and workshops by 25 eminent faculties from USA (exclusively 8 from Texas) and India. Total delegates attended both days were 225 (146 doctors and 65 nurses) from various medical colleges, corporate hospitals from Karnataka, Andhra, Kerala and Maharashtra. Some are of senior consultant and professor level category. Among the faculty were Prof (Dr).Kalpalatha Guntupalli, a leading Pulmonologist, who is a president of 20,000 strong US chest physicians; Dr Shankar Gopinath Chief Neuro Surgeon and also Dr Joseph Kass, Neurologist and Assistant Dean of Baylor College of Medicine, Texas.
According to the Critical Care Medicine Course Director, and HOD OF Anesthesiology at SSSIHMS, Dr. Kolli S.Chalam, this update equipped junior ICU Physicians with the skills required to manage all levels of complex cases in the ICU. The senior ICU physicians who attend were benefited by interacting with senior faculty from India and USA. The workshops were designed by leading physicians, Dr.Pradeep Rangappa for Mechanical Ventilation, Dr Kolli Chalam and Dr Sathya Swaroop for ultrasound /Echo and Dr.Aruna Ramesh for Simulation, of ICU case scenarios.
KMC (Karnataka medical council) awarded for the conference 4 credit hours for delegates and six for faculty. Delegates and outside faculty gave an excellent feedback about the conference, our patient care facilities. US faculty has made a commitment to visit our institute biannually and also through video conferencing facility take part in our clinical, academic and research activities. SSSIHMs, Bangalore stands out as a testimony for promoting clinical excellence based on human values.
