Hyderabad: The successful launch of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Agni-5 from ITR in Wheeler Island, Chandipur in Odisha, made the scientists of Hyderabad feel proud as more than 90 per cent of it was developed at the Defence laboratories here. While the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) played a pivotal role in making of the missile, other labs, such as ASL (Advanced Systems Laboratory) and DRDL (Defence Research and Development Lab) also contributed significantly. More than 100 private industries of the city supplied vital components to the missile, taking the contribution to a highest level, according to highly-placed defence sources.

Sharing their joy over the enormous success, Dr Satish Reddy, Director of RCI told The Hans India that they could now develop much-longer range vehicles with nuclear war heads which could hit and destroy targets even more precisely.

Detailing the contribution of RCI, Reddy disclosed that- “RCI has developed complete avionics with on-board computers, inter-face units, the navigation systems, control systems, batteries and power systems, telemetry and telecommunication components and antennas. All these systems and redundant navigation mechanism has taken Agni-5 to target within few meters of accuracy after travelling more than 5,000 km.”

The ASL has developed the rocket motors, re-entry heat shield, stage-separation mechanism and DRDL has contributed the liquid propulsion reaction-control system from its end. The materials have been specially made at a number of industries in Hyderabad and all of them were brought here for testing before the final assembly, informed Reddy. “I am particularly happy on one account that several new technologies were incorporated this time in terms of navigation, guidance and engine and tested and were found to be effective. All of them were developed indigenously and making it the most advanced version. The RINS (Ring Laser Gyro-based Inertial Navigation System) and MINS (Micro Navigation System) were some of the advanced ones which ensured perfect hit,” he explained. “Only few developed nations possess the advanced technologies incorporated. The DRDO scientists have developed these technologies totally indigenous and made India join the advanced nations,” he remarked.

He said this success owed to a decade-long effort of committed scientists from top to bottom. Stating that Agni-5 success would be a game-changer strategically, he said, it paves way for the future projects that include interceptors.
