New lease of life for dying lakes

Hyderabad: As many as 19 abandoned water bodies including some historical tanks are all set to get a new lease of life in Greater Hyderabad limits under Mission Kakatiya. On the lines of the development of famous Hussainsagar-Tank Bund, the State government has finalised plans to revive the dying tanks in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) under the Mission Kakatiya, according to an official release issued here on Monday.
With the active intervention of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao, the State Irrigation Department has taken up the big task of restoration of tanks which were abandoned after the surroundings of the precious water bodies were encroached upon. It is estimated that Rs 282 crore would be required for the programme. The two departments would bear the expenditure equally.
The tanks identified for renovation are - the famous Fox Sagar (Jeedimetla), Durgam Cheruvu (Raidurg) Nalla Cheruvu (Medchal), Mohini Cheruvu (Amberpet), Madddela Kunta (Bairamalguda), Pedda Cheruvu (Mansoorabad), Surram Cheruvu (Bandlaguda), Ananthagani Kunta (Shaikpet), Oora Cheruvu (Kapra), Nalagandla Cheruvu (Nalagandla), Mukkidi Tank (RK Puram), Cherlapally Tank (Cherlapally), Pedda Cheruvu (Gangaram), Malka Cheruvu (Raidurg), Pedda Cheruvu (Neknapur), Malka Tank (Upparapally), Boin Cheruvu (Hasmathpet), Amber Cheruvu (Kukatpally) and Patel Cheruvu (Madingaduda) would be developed.
Construction of tanks bunds around the water bodies, walking tracks, lighting systems, Bathukamma steps and vehicle parking areas will be developed at all water bodies and boating facilities would also be provided depending on the availability of water. Besides preserving the water bodies, the objective of the revival of the tanks is to promote them as recreation centres for local people. The Irrigation Department was entrusted to finalise the development plan for each water body. The MA & UD Department would provide logistical support and also address the encroachment issue, if any, the release said adding that the government targeted to complete the works in six months’ time.
