Hyderabad: Minister K. Tarakarama Rao on Tuesday handed over the sanction letter of Rs. One Crore Grant to rural innovator and Padma Shree awardee Chintakindi Mallesham.

Chintakindi Mallesham had been awarded the prestigious Padma Shree award earlier this year for developing the Laxmi Asu Machine. He hails from a weaving family in erstwhile Nalgonda district. He was moved by the hours of manual and backbreaking work by his mother to complete the ‘asu’ making – an important process in Pochampalli handloom weaving.

Mallesham had spent about eight years to develop the Laxmi Asu Machine. His invention reduces the manual ‘asu’ making work of almost six hours to one and half hours.

Minister KT Rama Rao had promised assistance from the Telangana State Government when he had felicitated Chintakindi Mallesham on being awarded the coveted Padma Shree by the Union Government.

Today, the Minister handed over the sanction letter of Rs One Crore grant to Mallesham. This grant would be used to procure land, build shed and manufacture Laxmi Asu machines. The machines produced by Mallesham would greatly help ramp up production of Pochampally weavers.

The minister said that the State Government would take all steps to ensure rural innovators like Chintakindi Mallesham are promoted. He said that Mallesham’s services would be used to mentor the next generation of innovators using institutions such as T-Works.

Chintakindi Mallesham thanked the Minister for the assistance and said he would utilize the grant to come up with more innovations for the handloom sector.
