Hyderabad: The State government is all set to issue an ordinance to implement its policy making Telugu language compulsory from the next academic year.

It may be recalled here that the government decided to make learning Telugu language as a compulsory subject till Intermediate. According to sources, the government had contemplated bringing a law making the learning of Telugu language as a compulsory subject.

However, ahead of bringing the enactment, it has decided to promulgate an ordinance. A draft policy document had been prepared by the School Education Department (SED) and sent the same for the scrutiny of the law department.

Once the law department gives its node, it will be sent to obtain the ascent of Governor E S L Narasimhan for issuing an ordinance, the sources added. However, for people studying Urdu language as their mother tongue will be exempted from studying Telugu language as a compulsory subject.
