4-cornered contest in Narasannapeta constituency

Srikakulam: Both the ruling TDP and the Congress have shared power equal times in Narasannapeta Assembly constituency in the district. The segment formed in 1955, spread over Narasannapeta, Jalumuru, Polaki and Saravakota mandals.

So far the constituency witnessed 12 elections including byelections. The Congress won in 1978, 1989, 1999, 2004 and in 2009 elections. TDP won in 1983, 1985, 1994 and in 2014 elections. Swatantra party, Reddy Congress and YSRCP won from here once.

Polinati Velama, Kalinga and Turpu Kapu communities play major role in the victory of aspirants. In Polaki and Jalumuru mandals, Kalinga caste voters more in number and in Saravakota mandal, Turpu Kapu voters are more, in Narasannapeta mandal, Polinati Velama voters are more in numbers.

This time sitting MLA B Ramana Murthy from TDP, D Krishna Das from YSRCP, D Jagan Mohan Rao from Congress and L Ranjit from Jana Sena parties will contest in the elections. The voters have been electing Polinati Velama caste candidates from this segment since the beginning. Only three families with surnames Baggu, Simma and Dharmana have been ruling the segment till today and they are relatives also.
