53,711 MGNREGS works proposed in Srikakulam

Srikakulam: Over 53,711 works are proposed in the district under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in the current financial year with an estimated cost of Rs 1,620.84 crore.

The district has 43,301 Shrama Shakthi Sanghams (SSS) in 4,357 villages and total identified wage seekers are 7,69,949. In the first three months (first quarter), 15,426 works are completed out of total proposed 53,711 works.

For 15, 426 completed works a total of Rs 261.80 crore amount was paid, of the total payment, Rs 251.08 crore was paid as wages for workers in rural areas and Rs 10.72 crore spent as material component. Huge amount was paid to works like removal of silt in tanks, drainages, formation of clay and gravel roads.

During the first quarter, in total 5,38,320 workers attended for works across the district. Of them male workers are 2,04, 022 and female workers are 3,34,098 and more women workers are getting wages through MGNREGS works. Out of the total wage seekers, 2,163 workers attended works for 100 days continuously.

Wages are also being paid to workers on third day after attending the works. "With an aim to provide employment to rural workers even in rainy season we proposed some works like cultivation of horticulture plants, water storage ponds, village parks, play grounds at schools and villages," said District Water Resources Management Agency (DWMA) Project Director Hanumanthu Kurma Rao to The Hans India. DWMA is an implementing agency for MGNREGS works at the district level.
