Amaravati: 55,345 crimes against women reported in last 4 yrs in State

Amaravati: Number of crimes which took place against women in the State for the last four years is alarming.

Altogether, 55,345 atrocities took place against women between 2016 and 2019, according to a document from the Home Ministry.

Highest number of cases was recorded in 2017, which is 14,696. In 2016, 13,948 cases were registered, 14,048 cases in 2018 and 12,653 cases in 2019 till October.

Among all, the cases of harassment, outraging of modesty and cases under Dowry Prohibition Act are very high.

More than 5,500 harassment cases were booked under harassment of women in 2016, nearly 6,000 cases in 2017, more than 6,350 in 2018 and about 6,000 in 2019. In cases related to outraging of modesty, 4,477 cases were registered in 2016, 6672 in 2017, 4,215 in 2018 and 3,601 in 2019.

The cases booked under PD Act are: 1,109 in 2016, 1,174 in 2017, 794 in 2018 and 801 in 2019. There are 190 dowry deaths recorded in 2016, 149 in 2017, 140 in 2018 and 120 in 2019. Dowry murder cases reported were 80 in 2016, 49 in 2017, 30 in 2018 and 35 in 2019.

Under the category of abetment to suicide, at least 526 cases were registered in 2016, 496 in 2017, 380 in 2018 and 316 in 2019. The crime record reveals that 343 women were murdered in 2016, 316 in 2017, 303 in 2018 and 233 in 2019.

The rape cases reported was also high in number. In all 969 rape cases were registered in 2016, 1,046 in 2017, 1,096 in 2018 and 1,010 in 2019.

Cases related to abduction of kids in 2016 were 456, 575 in 2017, 542 in 2018 and 415 in 2019. The bigamy cases recorded were 240 in 2016, 262 in 2017, 195 in 2018 and 146 in 2019.

During a discussion on safety of women in the Assembly on Monday, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy stated that there was an urgent need to create confidence among people and fear in the minds of criminals. He also added that the number of crimes against women registered during the last five years was alarming.
