Nelapadu (Amaravati): Director General of Police Gautam Damodar Sawang appeared before the Andhra Pradesh High Court here on Wednesday to explain the departmental version in connection with the release of the vehicles seized by the police while they were used in smuggling liquor.

Justice Devanand, who took up the writ petition, remarked that the case was not that important to instruct the DGP to appear before the court. However, all are equal before the judiciary, he added.

Justice Devanand said that he was aware that the DGP was an honest and straightforward officer. The Justice also complimented the police department for their relentless services during the pandemic in the State.

Advocate DSNV Prasad, who appeared on behalf of the petitioners, claimed that the officials did not follow the rules to release the vehicles.

Justice Devanand suggested to the DGP that the Advocate General and the government pleaders were not giving proper guidance to the officials.

Referring to the poor guidance provided by the government pleaders, Justice Devanand said that they were not acting properly on the decisions of the government which is taking them very fast.

He suggested to the government to rectify the minor shortcomings in the Special Enforcement Bureau.

The Justice further opined that the people might think that the judiciary was against the government due to the attitude of the government pleaders which does not augur well for anybody.

The DGP informed the High Court that they had issued a memo to hand over the vehicles to the departments concerned.
