Amaravati: Govt decides not to conduct Local Body elections at capital villages
In the latest development, the government of Andhra Pradesh headed by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has taken a sensational decision on the local body elections. The government on reportedly cancelled the elections in the capital region of Amaravati and has written to state election commission to this extent.
The letter sought to halt Sarpanch, MPTC and ZPTC elections in 19 villages in the Thulluru manual stating the certain gram panchayats being merged in the municipality. The government appealed the High Court to take a decision in view of the cases and lawsuits file on the capital region. However, there are reports that the government is not in a position to hold elections in the wake of ongoing agitation against the proposal of shifting the secretariat to Visakhapatnam.
The election schedule for local bodies has been released on Saturday. As per the schedule, the elections for MPTC and ZPTC are said to be held in two phases in March 21 and 24 while the municipal elections are said to be held on March 29. The election commission is taking measures at a brisk pace to ensure the elections be done in a smooth manner. It remains to be seen how the opposition TDP would react to this latest development.
