AP government assures to complete Veligonda project's tunnel works by June 2020
The AP government has allocated more funds for the construction of irrigation projects in the state. Recently, reverse tendering for the major projects under construction, Polavaram and Veligonda, has been completed. The work of Polavaram is currently underway. Even the lighting project's tunnel work is gaining momentum. One of the two tunnels at Veligonda is almost completed. Of the two tunnel excavation works of 18.8 km, one and a half km of the first tunnel and 7.5 km of the second tunnel are pending will be completed by the first tunnel next year and the state government has decided to give 10 tmc of water to Veligonda by June.
AP Water Resources Minister Anil Kumar Yadav has made it clear that by next year, Veligonda will be given water from Srisailam. This will provide water for irrigation and drinking to 15 lakh people in 30 zones in the Badewel area of Kadapa district, drought-hit areas of Prakasam district. Already the western Prakasam region is facing severe water shortage Markapuram, Yarragondapalem, Gidalur, Kanigiri and Darshi constituencies in the region will soon receive water.
If the government would provide water by June next year, the people of the region will be better off. The tunnel is currently under construction in the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve Forest. 43.5 TMC of flood water is collected from the Nillamala forest on the Krishna River at the top of the Srisailam Dam. From there, two 22-meter-long Nallamala Sagar reservoir was built by dams near the three villages of Madhu Sunkesula, Gottipadaya and Kakkarla in a range of two hills. It can store up to 45 TMCs of water. However, this water should only be taken from Srisailam surplus water. It will also flood for 45 days in Krishna.
