Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Higher Education Department is planning to introduce a five-year degree in engineering. Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has directed the officials of the Higher Education Department in this regard.

The Higher Education Department felt that the students, who have completed the engineering course, are not having sufficient skills on the subject.

Against this backdrop, the State government intends to introduce one-year apprentice course to improve the skills in all aspects.

The officials are taking steps to introduce the new system from the next academic year. The Education Department is also contemplating to introduce "life skill syllabus" in the graduate courses and other skills in the sixth semester thus making it four-year degree course.

This decision will be implemented from the next academic year, according to sources.
