Awareness rally on eye donation organised in Tirupati
Tirupati: The department of Ophthalmology in SV Medical College (SVMC) has conducted public awareness programmes on the occasion of world eye donation fortnight being observed from August 25 to September 8 every year.
These programmes include educating the public through videos, distribution of pamphlets and small group discussions with the public and display of posters regarding eye donation in prime areas of the hospital.
The message they carried through these programmes was that eye donation is a noble act. Donating eyes gives not only sight but also life to two persons and the persons dependent on them. The donated eyes are used for corneal transplantation.
On Saturday, the department has conducted a massive rally and distributed educational material to the public. Nearly 250 students and 50 doctors participated in the rally which was flagged off by SV Medical College Principal Dr C Jaya Bhaskar and Superintendent of Ruia Hospital Dr V Bhavani. The department has collected around 400 eyes last year taking a lead in reducing the incidence of corneal blindness.
