Bhimavaram: Geospatial tech helps preserving water bodies: Experts

Bhimavaram: Better water managements can be achieved with the help of geospatial technology in preserving the water resources, said Dr NL Vijay Kumar, senior scientist of National Institute of Space Research of Brazil while addressing the webinar jointly organised by the Civil Engineering department and Geospatial Information Centre of SRKR Engineering College here on Friday. The short-term programme on Capacity Building and Training on Geospatial Technologies concluded on Friday. Dr K Meher Ganesh presided over the webinar.

Dr Vijay Kumar said that geospatial technology can be used to store naturally available water. He said that the students and their parents in Brazil were informed not to waste the precious water. He said that the 700-crore people all over the world were facing the water scarcity. "Every country should focus on the problem," he said.

NRSP Group director Dr K Mrutyunjaya Reddy suggested use of earth observation satellite to track the protection of Kolleru lake in the coastal zone and how the coastal erosion was taking place and to take preventive measures. He also suggested the review of the erosion of mangroves in the coastal belt.

Dr Anupama Sharma of National Institute of Hydrology at Rourke suggested the study of systems adopted in prevention of seeping of salt water in the coastal area of Gujarat.

SRKR Engineering college principal Dr M Jagapati Raju complimented the various experts who were extending valuable suggestions for the students of the college.

Geospatial Information Centre (GIC) coordinator Dr PA Ramakrishnam Raju said that with the cooperation of national and international institutions 13 research centres were set up under the GIC.

College secretary and correspondent Sagi Vithal Ranga Raju, CEO SRK Nisanth Varma, Civil engineering head A Subrahmanyam Raju, professors Dr K M Ganesh, Dr P Raghuram, Dr T Rambabu, Dr G Suribabu, N Sivakishan, J Jivan Kumar and others also participated.
