CCVA celebrates Mothers-in-Law Day in Vijayawada

Vijayawada: MLA Malladi Vishnu honoured eminent mothers–in–law from different fields of specialisation at the Cultural Centre of Vijayawada & Amaravati (CCVA) on Saturday as part of the World Mothers-in-Law Day celebrations organised jointly by CCVA, Andhra Arts Academy (AAA) and Sridevi Cultural and Social Welfare Society (SSCWS).

Speaking on the occasion, Vishnu said that honouring mother-in-law and treat her on par with mother was part of our culture. He cited a few examples from Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Dr E Sivanagi Reddy briefed the origin of World Mothers-in-law Day as early as 1934 in Texas, and the activities taken up on the occasion. Munjuluri Krishna Kumari, former Director of All India Radio while addressing the huge gathering of mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, said there were nice and worse mothers-in-law in the past and present.

Stating that we shall not generalise the issue, she felt the need for nourishing mutual and respectful relationship between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. She condemned the one side projection of mothers-in-law as bad characters in TV serials. Dr Kavuru Satyavati gave a good number of examples of nice mothers-in-law as mentioned in the medieval and modern Telugu literature.

Based on the audio speeches received, around thirty mothers-in-law were honoured on the occasion which was curated by Dupati Sridevi, chairperson of SSCWS. Golla Narayana Rao, president of AAA, said that mothers-in-law shall be regarded for their support and help to families since ancient times and as a token of love and affection, the concerned shall honour them. A good number of women from in and around Vijayawada City attended the event.
