Coronavirus patient dies, locals oppose funerals in Nellore city

Nellore: Residents of Bodigadithota, Vaikunthapuram areas refused to allow the dead body of an elderly woman who died due to coronavirus for funerals on Thursday. A woman from the Kukkalagunta area joined the GGH on May 12 suspecting COVID-19 and they shifted her to Narayana General Hospitals on 13 for treatment. On 14, she was tested positive and died on Wednesday, May 20. At the age of around 80 and ailing with diabetes and hypertension her body hadn't responded to the treatment, doctors said.

On Thursday, after completing medical protocols, they shifted the dead body on Mahaprasthanam ambulance to Kailasabhoomi for funerals, the local population raised objections.

Even though police officials tried to convince them, they refused to conduct funerals in the place. Police officials informed the superiors of the incident and the discussions are going on.

Similar instances are happening in many places and a local orthopedic doctor who died in Chennai city also faced a similar situation earlier. Locals opposed conducting funerals in the Ambattur area and finally, police shifted the dead body to a distant place arranging tight security and conducted them.
