Covid positive cases continue to rise in Srikakulam

Srikakulam: Covid positive cases are continuing to increase in Srikakulam district with each passing day. Chennai links are playing major role in the rise of number of cases in a short span. During the last week of April, only five Covid positive cases were reported in the district and later another two cases were reported. The number of cases remained constant at seven for more than one month.

However, after easing of lockdown restrictions and allowing movement of migrant workers, Covid cases started to increase in Srikakulam. In the second week of May, cases increased to 35 across the district and third week saw positive cases rise to 65. As on Monday, total cases went up to 156 in the district.

Out of the total 156 Covid positive cases, 130 patients are those who returned from Chennai. Out of the remaining 26 cases, four persons each returned from Delhi and Hyderabad, two each from West Bengal and Warangal, three from Surat in Gujarat, eight from Nellore and one each from Vijayawada, Abu Dhabi and Qatar.

Large number of migrant workers returned to Srikakulam from Chennai through Shramik trains. These workers developed Covid positive symptoms and they remained ascarriers of Covid to Srikakulam.

During the last 10 days, officials have not been disclosing the number of fresh cases through daily health bulletins but were only alerting local people on precautionary measures. "Covid positive cases are confined only to quarantine centres where migrant workers are staying and we are strictly following guidelines to prevent the spread of disease," District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr M Chenchayya and District Surveillance Officer (DSO) for Covid cases, Dr Bagadi Jagannadha Rao, explained to The Hans India.
