Eluru: The CPM city unit staged a dharna at the Collectorate here on Friday, protesting against the failure of the State government to control skyrocketing prices of vegetables.

Addressing the protesters, the party city unit secretary P Kishore said that almost all vegetable prices soared and available at Rs 50 per kg. This is a burden on the poor and middle class who depend on vegetables regularly.

Even a bunch of coriander leaves is priced at Rs 40. Going by this, one can imagine how the prices reached uncontrollable levels in the markets. Even in the Rythu Bazaars, the prices of vegetables were not affordable by people.

Wholesale traders have been preventing some vegetables from reaching the Rytu Bazaars. On the other hand, the price of chicken also out of reach for the people as the traders formed syndicate and controlling the prices, he alleged.
