CPM warns of State-wide agitation if government fails to curb violence

Tirupati: The Communist Party of India-Marxist on Sunday warned that it would organise a State-wide agitation if the government failed to curb honour killings and increasing attacks on Dalits in Chittoor district.

Speaking to the media here, CPI-M State secretary and former RajyaSabha member P Madhu expressed concern over two honourkillings in Usarapenta (Palamaner) and Santhipuram (Kuppam). He condemned the attack on a Dalit youth for marrying a girl from OBC in Yerpedu near Tirupati. He blamed the police for failing to check the incidents.

He warned that the party would organise a State-wide agitation if the government failed to curb the violence in 15 days. He demanded an inquiry into the failure of the police to check the incidents of violence against Dalits. The incidents of violence in the past five months created fear among the Dalits, he said.

The CPI-M leader later addressed a public meeting in Yerpedu alongwith leaders of various Dalit organisations.Retired district judge Gurappa and others also spoke.
