Kurnool: All India Youth Federation (AIYF) State secretary N Lenin Babu demanded that the State government to initiate stringent action on food adulterating mafia, which is playing with the health of several people. The AIYF activists staged a protest in front of Gandhi statue near the Collectorate on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Lenin Babu said that over 10 lakh people were falling prey to cancer disease every year by consuming adulterated foods like milk, chilly power, turmeric and edible oils. Apart from cancer disease, the people were also becoming prey to liver, kidney and heart strokes, he said and demanded the government to impose Preventive and Detention (PD) Act on the persons adulterating the consumables.

It is very unfortunate that the food safety department which has to control the adulterating mafia, is facing staff shortage, he lamented. He noted there were only 39 staff against the required strength of 649 across the State. Demanding immediate filling of vacant posts, he urged the government to set up mobile lab in addition to permanent food adulterating test laboratory in the district headquarters.

CPI district secretary SN Rasoon said the police, revenue, health and vigilance departments should be given special powers to prevent the food adulteration. He urged that awareness camps should be organised across the district besides including a subject in school curriculum. AIYF district president Naga Ramudu, Karumanchi, K Srinivasulu, AISF district president Dhanunjaya, Sriramulu and Dhanalakshmi participated.
