Development works worth 40 cr in progress at SPMVV
Tirupati: Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) has been taking up infrastructure development works on a massive scale by utilising various government schemes. Presently Rs.40 crore worth works are at different stages in the campus.
With the state government's grant of Rs.20 crores it was planned to construct a huge hostel block to meet the everincreasing demand for accommodation. Being the only women's university in AP and Telangana, the student intake has been steadily increasing.
Out of the total students of more than 5500, the university could provide accommodation to only 3,600 in its 10 hostels. Outside accommodation is provided to another 500 students by leasing out private hostels. The parents want that their children should stay in university hostels. Presently, research scholars have no hostel facility and they need to look after their own accommodation.
To overcome all these problems, with the capital grant provided in the budget during 2018-19 budget, it was proposed to build one hostel block named as Krishnaveni with eight floors (G+7) at a cost of Rs.8 crores for which the then Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had laid foundation stone. The new government also provided the capital grant paving the way for its speedy completion.
Using the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) funds of Rs.20 crores, it was proposed to take up other development works. Under this, another hostel block called Sabari with four floors (G+3) is constructed with Rs.6 crores.
The University In-charge Vice Chancellor Prof V Uma told The Hans India that these two hostel blocks will fulfil the requirements of all their students. These hostels are expected to be ready by the beginning of next academic year.
Under the RUSA guidelines, Rs.10 crores have to be spent on new constructions, while Rs.6 crores are earmarked for renovations. Another Rs.4 crores have to be used for procuring new equipment. By utilising these resources, a new Humanities Block is being built with Rs.4 crores to house the law department.
Several renovation works and repairs in library and hostel kitchens, underground cable works, development of Gandhi Square and improvement of sound system in the varsity auditorium etc., have been started. Also, 75 CC cameras are being installed in the entire campus. Digital class rooms and command control room will be coming up, said Prof Uma.
