Drunken drivers paid 26 lakh as penalty in 10 months in Tirupati

Tirupati: Drunken drivers have paid Rs 26 lakh penalty to government treasury in last 10 months from January. According to Tirupati Urban traffic police, around 1,000 persons were booked under Motor Vehicle Act for driving the two-wheelers and four-wheelers by consuming liquor.

Earlier in 2018 traffic police had booked more than 1,500 drunken drive cases. The cases have come down to 1,000 this year. Every day in the city police have been conducting alcohol consuming test to motorcyclists from 7pm to 9 pm on city roads. In addition, Police and motor vehicle inspectors joint conduct inspection of vehicles weekly twice.

Tirupati Urban SP Dr Gaja Rao Bhupal has been striving to reduce the number of drunken drive cases in the city. The SP directed the traffic DSP Musthafa and his team to conduct regular checks for preventing drunken drive habit among the public.

In the last 10 months, Tirupati Second Class magistrate had imposed simple imprisonment to the drivers in about 30 cases. Traffic DSP Mustafa said to The Hans India that everyday at various places in the city our cops are conducting alcohol test to motorcyclists for reducing the accidents. He said that in over drinking cases, the drivers may be imprisoned. As per MV Act court can impose 3 to 7 days imprisonment depending on the severity of the case.
