Vijayawada: The leaders of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a dharna at the Lenin centre here on Sunday, protesting against lathicharge on students in West Bengal.

The leaders strongly condemned the brutal lathicharge on the DYFI and SFI activists at Howrah in West Bengal. Speaking on the occasion, SFI district secretary M Someshwara Rao and DYFI district secretary T Praveen said that they would not keep quiet if West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Benerjee resorts to such attacks on students.

They recalled that the students took out a rally demanding that the government take steps for industrial development. The police used tear gas shells to disrupted the students and resorted to lathi-charge and 100 students were injured and five seriously.

Using police force on students is against democracy, they said. Student leaders Kota Babu, N Nageswara Rao, Nizam, Venkateswara Rao and others were present.
