Bhimavaram: Women empowerment will be possible only when women were given equal opportunities, said All India Women Democratic Association (AIDWA) West Godavari district committee secretary D Kalyani.

She was speaking at the district (delta) committee meeting of AIDWA presided over by district unit president P Purna here on Friday. She said that gender equality was a distant dream without providing education and jobs to women on par with men.

Development is possible when social, economic and political opportunities are extended to women. No serious effort was made to offer equal share in the above aspects to women during the 72 years of Independence, she lamented.

Kalyani expressed concern over the rise in atrocities on women, including minor girls. The crimes against women are continuing because of lack of implementation of laws. The culprits are going unpunished as the diluted laws failed to deliver justice to victims, she averred.

AIDWA leaders P Lakshmi, B Satyavati, S Udayakumari, Suguna, Anasuya, Durga Bhavani, Vimala and others were present on the occasion.
