Gold shops, jewellery showrooms raided in Nellore

Nellore: Officials of the Legal Metrology department conducted raids on gold shops and jewellery showrooms in Nellore city on Wednesday. Teams have raided Kalyan Jewellers, Jos Alukkas and other shops.

Director General (Legal Metrology) E Damodar said that they had found deviations and were recording them. Officials have conducted raids in the wake of complaints on quality and quantity of gold and focusing on monthly deposit schemes whether there are within the guidelines of the Prize Money Chits Banning Act.

According to Legal Metrology department norms, jewellery shops should compulsorily mention purity of gold (22 carat or 24 carat), exact weight, price as on the date, if any stones used in the jewellery and its weight.

Price and making charges should be mentioned separately in the bill. If any wastage is there, it should also be shown separately, and the price of the wastage should not be included in the gold rate.

In some cases, charging more in the name of VAT, making charges and wastage which is against the law, officials said. Also, price should be calculated exactly on the net weight. Officials said they would book cases of any such deviations found during their raids.

Senior officials said machines for test weight are being made available to the customers in all showrooms.
