Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan inaugurating component separation unit at Guntur Red Cross Blood Bank from Raj Bhavan in Vijayawada on Wednesday

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Governor and Indian Red Cross Society AP State branch president Biswa Bhusan Harichandan inaugurated the component separation unit at the Guntur Red Cross Blood Bank, in virtual mode from Raj Bhavan in Vijayawada through video link on Wednesday.

The financial assistance for the sophisticated equipment for components separation unit for plasma, platelets and red cells, a blood collection van and an emergency ambulance worth Rs 1.45 crore was provided by the Rotary International, the Rotary Foundation and their service units, Rotary Club of Guntur and Rotary Club of Adarsh.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said the functionaries, staff and volunteers of all units of Red Cross AP State branch have been working hard, since the Covid-19 lockdown and in the post-lockdown period and extended committed services to the needy people.

He said the Red Cross volunteers organised several blood donation camps on regular basis and provided 4,294 units of blood to 813 Thalassemia children which is a remarkable achievement.

The Governor also made a mention of the record number of 9,287 units of blood collected through 99 blood donation camps organised across the State recently in connection with the birthday celebrations of Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

He said blood donation is a noble cause and every blood donor is a life saver and a hero to someone, somewhere, who received the gracious gift of life and it is a most precious resource possessed by us and gives us the ability to save a life by sharing this invaluable gift with someone in need.

The Governor complimented the members of Rotary International, the Rotary Foundation and their service units, Rotary Club of Guntur and Rotary Club of Adarsh for joining hands with the Red Cross in upgrading the blood centre into a full-fledged components separation unit and that their act of kindness would help the Red Cross officials to serve the needy people with more dedication.

The Indian Red Cross Society, Guntur was established way back in 1937 and has been one of the most active branches in the State serving people of the region with facilities such as a maternity home, an orphanage and a blood bank. Mukesh Kumar Meena, secretary to Governor and vice-president, Dr Sridhar Reddy, chairman, AK Parida, general secretary of Indian Red Cross Society, AP State branch, Samuel Anand, district Collector & president of IRCS, Guntur, Rtn Shekhar Mehta, president-elect of Rotary International, Vadlamani Ravi, chairman, Guntur Red Cross unit, also participated in the programme.
