Govt responds to setting up of High Court in Kurnool
Amaravati: The State government has reacted for the first time on the demand of setting up of High Court bench or shifting the HC to Kurnool, on Thursday, while giving a reply to a question raised by MLCs KE Prabhakar, NMD Farooq and B Tirumala Naidu.
They asked the Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, "Whether the government is contemplating to set up the High Court or High Court bench in Kurnool as per the Sri Bagh pact. If so the steps are taken in this regard".
Reacting to that, Adimulapu Suresh, Minister for Human Resource Development, on behalf of Chief Minister informed that, Capital functions consist of executive, legislative and judicial functions. "To decide comprehensively wherefrom all these have to be delivered and to develop the state in a comprehensive manner, an Expert Committee has been constituted. Government is awaiting the report of the committee," he revealed.
Further, he explained that the Sri Bagh Pact was entered as per the circumstances at that time, which would not relevant for now. The Minister also informed the House that there were demands from various places in the state for setting up of the High Court, including from Kurnool, Visakhapatnam, even from Guntur and others. Advocates in Kurnool have been staging protests from the last two and a half months.
It is worth to mention that, the Union Government also reacted on the same issue in the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session, where it has clarified that the setting up of the High Court is the discretion of the state government. the Centre also informed that at present, the High Court has been established in the new capital city Amaravati and it has been functioning.
