Guntur: TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu demanded the state government to release funds for the completed Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) works without delay.

He alleged that though the Central government released funds, the state government was holding up its share preventing the clearance of bills for completed works.

Naidu addressed a meeting of former elected representatives of local bodies at the TDP state party office here on Wednesday.

The former chief minister held the YSRCP government responsible for the suicide of three persons who resorted to extreme step unable to bear the financial stress caused by delay in payment of MGNREGS arrears.

Urging such contractors not to commit suicide, he said the party would fight legally on their behalf against the government in this regard. He recalled that the TDP government had spent Rs 32,000 crore for MGNREGS works during the five years.

He demanded the government to release Rs 2,460 crore to clear pending MGNREGS bills. Later, MLC Y V B Rajendra Prasad announced that the party would stage dharnas at all MPDO offices in the state till November 3 on the issue. They have already started dharnas on October 23.
