Inferior quality onions upset customers in Guntur
Guntur: The consumers, who came to Rythu Bazaar at NTR Bus Station in the city, were disappointed with the substandard quality of onions on Thursday. The onions are small in size, substandard and contain more moisture.
As the government is supplying onions through the Rythu Bazaars at Rs 25-a-kg, thousands of customers thronging to collect onion but they were disappointed with their poor and inferior quality.
Following heavy demand for onions in the open market, the farmers are harvesting not fully grown up crop and selling without drying them up. Currently, the Marketing department is procuring onions from Tadepalligudem and Kadapa markets in the state and from Maharashtra state. During transport, some of the stock is getting damaged. The government is supplying 200 tonnes of onions through Rythu Bazaars per day in the state.
Speaking to The Hans India, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Marketing Department, J V V Satyanarayana said, "Due to demand, the farmers are selling onions with moisture and we are purchasing the same as there is no other choice. As the onions stock is not exposed to air, some stock is getting damaged. We are taking all steps to supply good quality onions."
