Eluru: Joint Collector M Venugopala Reddy has ordered the RDOs to conduct a special drive to clear the pending cases with regard to welfare of parents.

A district-level monitoring committee meeting on implementation of 'Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007' was held here on Friday. Addressing the meeting, Reddy expressed serious concern over accumulating cases of parents' neglect by their children.

While it is sad to have a special Act for protection of parents in society, it is too bad such act failed in implementation, he lamented. Informing that after bringing the Act for the security and welfare of the parents in 2007, he said the government had to issue guidelines for proper implementation of the same Act in 2011 by establishing special tribunals under the supervision of RDOs at the divisional level.

Under the Act, notices should be issued within a week with regard to cases filed in tribunals and the verdict after trial should be delivered within three months. For speedy disposal of cases regarding neglect of aged parents, the trial should be conducted on two Saturdays in a month and the case should be settled in two or three sittings.

Care should be taken so that the orders of the tribunal be implemented properly. If necessary, counseling should be conducted to bring change in the attitude of the children who neglect their aged parents, he added.
