Kadapa: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee working president N Tulasi Reddy on Monday welcomed the decision taken by the State Election Commission in postponing the elections to local bodies.

The SEC took a right decision in view of coronavirus spreading to 147 countries, including India, so far.

Addressing a press conference here, he said the West Bengal government urged the Central Election Commission(CEC) to postpone the elections in their State.

Tulasi Reddy recalled that the local body elections in West Godavari and Adilabad district were put off when they were hit by Godavari floods in 2013, he recalled.

He did not agree with Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy's contention that the Central funds to the State would be stopped if the elections to the local bodies were not held before March-end.

The contention may not hold water because the Centre itself declared Covid-19 as disaster, he felt.

He also appealed to the SEC to issue fresh notification for elections as the process of filing nominations by the candidates was not was not done fairly. It was ugly display of muscle power, he claimed.

He found fault with the "derogatory comments" made against the SEC Nimmagadda Prasad. It was unfortunate the State was under the rule of an immature politician, he said.
