Kakinada: Long queues at Rythu Bazaars to get 1 kg of onions
Kakinada: People have been waiting in long queues to get one kg of onions supplied at subsidized price of Rs 25-a-kg at Rytu Bazaars here. Onion price in open market soared to Rs 180 a kg.
Rythu Bazaar Estate Officer Tummala Venkat Rajan said that the quantity is not enough as the commodity is widely used in the various dishes. He said that with the direction of District Collector D Muralidhar Reddy, marketing officials set up special counters for onions at Rythu bazaars.
He said that they procured 56 bags, each bag weighting 45 kg from Kurnool district. Daily 2,000 to 2,500 consumers have been purchasing onions, he said. Housewife VT Lakshmi said that onions are being sold for Rs 180 per kg in the open market.
Marketing officials said that the new crop of onions will be harvested within four to five months. They get supply from Kurnool in 10 to 15 days. Small hotels and tiffin centres are not dared to sell onion Dosa and they deleted it from their menu card.
