Kurnool: The administration has been striving hard to stabilise the prices of tomatoes which are drastically falling in the district, said District Collector G Veera Pandiyan.

In a statement here on Friday, he said that cultivation of tomato crop starts in the months of July/August. The crop is harvested from September to January. Price was very good up to Rs 30/40 per kg till December 15 and the farmers got benefitted with good price. About 90 per cent of the crop picking was completed and sold by the farmers in the open market for a good price.

However, due to local arrivals in Telangana and everywhere else and also due to the last pickings of the season, the price has fallen. The collector said that usually every year the same cycle happens. As per the instructions of the Commissioner of Marketing, the officials started procurement from Monday (Dec 21) at the Market yard of Pattikonda.

Daily procurement of the tomato arrived at Pattikonda Market yard is being done by the marketing department and being sold on "No loss - No profit basis" in Rythu bazars to support the farmers and to prevent distress sale, the collector said.
