Rajamahendravaram: No lessons learnt from a series of boat tragedies

Rajamahendravaram: No lessons have been learnt despite loss of several lives in riverine mishaps in Godavari in the district in the past several years.

In 1945, a boat capsized in River Godavari near Devipatnam in which at about 50 people died and the boat has not yet been traced.

In 1964. a boat, named Uday Bhaskar, capsized, leading to death of 60 people and it was followed by another boat tragedy in which eight persons died.

In 1985, as many as 40 pilgrims died when a boat capsized in River Godavari at Sriramagiri when they were on their way to Sriramagiri to witness Sitarama Kalyanam.

In 1990, as many as 10 passengers died in another boat tragedy. In 1998, a total of 10 persons died in another boat accident in Vyenateya river.

In 2004, as many as 10 passengers died when a boat capsized in the river Godavari at Yedurlanka village. In the year 2008, five advocates died in a boat accident in the river at Koraturu near Devipatnam mandal and in 2009 four people died when the boat accident at Biyyaputippa village. In 2011, a Transco employee died in a boat tragedy.

In 2017, six students died when the boat in which they were travelling capsized in Godavari at Pasuvulanka and in 2018 as many as 19 people died at Manturu village in a boat capsize incident.
