Onion prices hiked for the second time in two months due to unseasonal rains
Once again, onion prices are hiked, ranging from Rs 90 to Rs 100 in many parts of the country. The average onion prices of the common man rose by Rs 80 per kg in August-September. Incessant rains Maharashtra has caused severe damage to onion crop. The crop was also severely hit in Nashik, Ahmednagar and Pune.
However, Onion prices have come down slightly in October. In many states, the price of kg onion touched Rs 100. The country's largest wholesale onion market Lasalgaon is offering the onion for Rs 55.50 per kg. Heavy rains in Nashik, Ahmednagar and Pune have triggered the rise in the prices due to the damage of crops.
In Hyderabad, the price per kilogram is Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kg. On Tuesday, the amount of a quality Grade-1 onion in Hyderabad was Rs. 60 while that of grade 2 quality is priced at Rs 50. In Mahabubnagar Grade-1 quality onion is priced at Rs.50 and Grade-2 at Rs.40. In the retail market, it is around Rs. 70. In Andhra Pradesh too, onion prices range between Rs 50 to Rs 70. Against this backdrop, the Center has decided to import onions from abroad. Onion is imported from Iran, Egypt and Turkey.
The centre banned their exports in September as onion prices hit the sky. The Commerce and Industry Department has issued orders not to export the onion until further orders. The Center, which has banned all kinds of onion exports, said the decision was made to bring the public out. It has been stated that the prohibition has been made under clauses 51 and 51 of the ITC Chapter 2. With heavy rains in the onion cultivation states, crop yields and prices have skyrocketed.
