Protests greet liquor shops in residential areas in Guntur

Women protesting against opening of liquor shop in the middle of residential locality at Srinagar in Guntur on Tuesday

Guntur: Opposing the opening of government liquor shop in the residential area, the women staged a protest on the road here on Tuesday.

As part of protest, they locked the liquor shop near statue of Bhagat Singh at Srinagar and staged a protest on the road. They warned that they will continue their protest till the liquor shop is shifted from residential area. They submitted a memorandum to excise superintendent N Balakrishnan demanding him removal of shop from the residential area.

Similarly, women staged a protest against setting up liquor shops in the residential areas at Gaddipadu and Tarakarama Nagar in the city.Protests also took place against liquor shop near the church at SC Colony in Velupur village under Achampet mandal and at Narayanapuram under Dachepalli mandal in the district.

Speaking to The Hans India, excise superintendent N Balakrishnan said, "We did not open three liquor shops in the city due to women protests and another one due to court case. I will convey the women's objections on setting up of three liquor shops to higher officials and take a decision accordingly."
