Stem cells help treat cancer, says oncologist N Krishna Reddy in Vijayawada

Vijayawada: Renowned oncologist N Krishna Reddy said that stem cell treatment is useful to treat cancer and thalassemia patients.

Addressing the gathering at the donor receipt meet held at PB Siddhartha College of Arts and Science, organised by Datri Blood Stem Cell Donor's Registry on Saturday, Dr Reddy said that there is a doubt about the donation of stem cell and no one accepts to donate stem cell.

He said that the people have a wrong notion that they would suffer severe health issues on donating the stem cell, which is absolutely wrong. He said that the stem cell will be reproduced in the body even after donating them.

Datri Blood Stem Cell Donors' Andhra Pradesh and Telangana head Ch Ravindranath said that the organisation which is an NGO collects stem cells. He said that it had supplied stem cells to 524 patients till date.

He introduced a cancer patient Bharati from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and said that the stem cell was donated to her by Bharath from Vijayawada who is studying medicine at Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Medical College.

He said that the donors show reluctance to donate stem cell due to lack of awareness.

Stem cell recipient Bharati said that Bharath saved not only her life and the future of their family members.

She said that doctors identified that she was suffering from blood cancer in 2017. She thanked the parents of the donor Bharath for accepting for a donation of stem cell.

Speaking on this occasion donor and medico Bharat expressed his happiness on donating his stem cells to the recipient Bharati and said he was lucky to save a life.
