Kurnool: On the occasion of World AIDS Day, the students of various educational institutions took out massive rallies in the town to educate people about the steps to be taken to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.

The District Collector G Veera Pandiyan and District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Narasimhulu flagged off the rally from collectorate on Sunday. The students' rally started from collectorate and passed through Raj Vihar Centre and culminated at Gandhi statue located at Zilla Parishad office.

They raised slogans against the deadly disease and took pledge to weed out the disease from the society. Meanwhile a troops of cultural activists performed some programmes to instil awareness among the people. Prior to flagging off the rally, the Collector Pandiyan spoke a few words.

He said it is very unfortunate that people though knowing about the root cause of the disease are committing the crime. Awareness programmes have to be conducted intensively in rural and urban areas. Several people are falling prey to the deadly disease due to lack of awareness, stated Pandiyan.

He directed the Medical Health and other department officials to initiate effective preventive measure to tackle the disease and wipe out HIV/AIDS and transform Kurnool to AIDS free district. The officials of AIDS Control Society are instructed to conduct awareness programmes.
